Housing & Shelter

Shelter affects growth, health and stress levels as much as feed does. Housing doesn't need to be expensive, but it does need to meet a few basic requirements.

  • Ventilation without drafts. Fresh air reduces the build-up of ammonia and moisture that drive respiratory disease, but direct cold drafts stress animals — design housing with airflow above animal height.
  • Dry bedding and flooring. Wet, dirty floors are one of the biggest drivers of foot problems, mastitis and internal parasite build-up across almost every species.
  • Space per animal. Overcrowding increases disease spread, aggression and stress; space requirements differ by species and age, but cramming more animals into the same shelter rarely pays off.
  • Protection from extremes. Shade in hot conditions and windbreaks in cold or wet conditions reduce the energy animals spend on temperature regulation, leaving more for growth or production.

Feeding & Nutrition

Feed is usually the largest ongoing cost in livestock production — getting it right has a bigger effect on profitability than almost any other decision.

  • Match feed to production stage. A lactating or laying animal, a growing youngster, and a mature animal at maintenance all have different energy and protein needs — one ration for all stages wastes feed on some animals and underfeeds others.
  • Always provide clean water. Water intake drives feed intake; animals with limited or dirty water eat less, grow slower and are more vulnerable to disease, regardless of feed quality.
  • Use local and low-cost feed resources. Crop residues, kitchen scraps, and locally available protein sources can substitute for a portion of commercial feed when balanced correctly, reducing cost without sacrificing performance.
  • Introduce feed changes gradually. Sudden diet changes, especially in ruminants, disrupt digestion — transition over several days rather than switching feed overnight.

Poultry

Chickens are often the fastest entry point into livestock keeping because of their short production cycle and lower capital requirement.

  • Separate layers from broilers nutritionally. Laying hens need higher calcium for eggshell formation; broilers raised for meat need a higher-protein grower ration to reach market weight efficiently.
  • Vaccinate on schedule. Newcastle disease and other viral outbreaks can wipe out a flock within days — a consistent vaccination schedule is one of the highest-return investments in poultry keeping.
  • Control the litter. Damp, ammonia-heavy litter damages birds' respiratory systems and feet — regular replacement or turning of litter keeps the house healthier.

Cattle

Cattle represent a larger investment and longer production cycle, which makes consistent management and health monitoring particularly important.

  • Match stocking rate to available grazing. Overstocking degrades pasture over time, reducing the land's carrying capacity in future seasons — rotational grazing helps pasture recover between grazing periods.
  • Supplement during dry periods. When grazing quality drops in the dry season, supplementing with crop residues, hay or mineral licks prevents the weight loss that's costly to recover later.
  • Monitor body condition, not just weight. A simple body condition score — checking fat cover over the ribs and spine — gives an early warning of nutritional problems before weight loss becomes severe.
  • Plan calving around feed availability. Timing calving so peak milk demand lines up with the best grazing period reduces the need for expensive supplementary feeding.

Goats & Sheep

Small ruminants are well suited to smaller landholdings and can be more resilient to drought than cattle, but they need their own specific management.

  • Provide browse, not just pasture. Goats in particular prefer browsing shrubs and trees over grazing grass — housing them purely on pasture underuses their natural feeding behavior.
  • Watch for internal parasites closely. Small ruminants are especially susceptible to worm burdens, particularly in wet conditions — regular monitoring (such as checking eyelid color for anemia) helps catch problems before animals decline.
  • Keep housing dry. Goats and sheep are particularly sensitive to damp conditions, which drive pneumonia and foot rot — raised slatted floors help keep bedding dry.
  • Manage breeding season deliberately. Controlled breeding, rather than continuous exposure to a male, lets you plan births around labor availability and market timing.

Pigs

Pigs convert feed to weight efficiently, which makes feed management and biosecurity the two areas most worth getting right.

  • Feed for growth stage. Piglets, growers and finishers each need different protein levels — a single ration across all stages leaves growth potential on the table.
  • Practice strict biosecurity. Pigs are vulnerable to serious diseases like African Swine Fever, which can spread through contaminated feed, equipment or visitors — controlling farm access and disinfecting equipment matters more here than for most livestock.
  • Provide wallows or cooling in heat. Pigs can't sweat effectively, so access to shade and a wet area for cooling prevents heat stress that otherwise slows growth.
  • Manage waste to control disease and odor. Regular removal of manure reduces parasite cycling and disease pressure within the pen.

Fish Farming

Small-scale aquaculture can produce protein efficiently on a modest area of land, provided water quality is managed carefully.

  • Monitor water quality, not just quantity. Oxygen levels, ammonia build-up from waste and feed, and temperature all affect fish growth and survival more directly than pond size alone.
  • Stock at an appropriate density. Overstocking a pond leads to stunted growth and higher disease risk as fish compete for oxygen and space.
  • Feed consistently, avoid overfeeding. Uneaten feed decomposes and degrades water quality — feeding smaller amounts more frequently is usually better than one large daily feeding.
  • Choose species suited to your water source. Tilapia and catfish are common choices in warmer climates for their tolerance of variable water conditions and relatively fast growth.

Breeding

Breeding decisions made this season shape the productivity of your herd or flock for years to come.

  • Select breeding stock deliberately. Choose replacement males and females based on growth rate, health history and productivity, not just availability — genetics compound over generations.
  • Avoid inbreeding. Bringing in new bloodlines periodically, or rotating breeding males between herds, prevents the fertility and health problems that build up from repeated close breeding.
  • Time breeding to your resources. Plan matings so that births, and the peak nutritional demand that follows, land during periods when feed is most available.
  • Track breeding dates. Recording service and expected birth dates lets you prepare housing, feed and labor in advance rather than being caught off guard.

Health & Disease Prevention

Prevention is consistently cheaper than treatment in livestock production — a good portion of losses come from problems that were preventable with routine care.

  • Establish a vaccination and deworming schedule. Following a consistent, species-appropriate schedule prevents the disease outbreaks and parasite burdens that cause the largest production losses.
  • Quarantine new animals. Isolating newly purchased animals for a couple of weeks before introducing them to the herd prevents them from bringing in disease undetected.
  • Learn the early signs of illness. Reduced feed intake, lethargy, and changes in droppings or discharge are often the earliest visible signs of a problem — catching these early allows faster, cheaper treatment.
  • Keep a relationship with a local animal health provider. Even infrequent contact with a vet or extension officer means faster, more accurate diagnosis when something does go wrong.

Good records turn livestock keeping from guesswork into a business you can plan and improve over time.

  • Identify individual animals. Ear tags, tattoos or simple numbering systems let you track an individual animal's health, breeding and production history rather than relying on memory.
  • Record production data. Milk yield, egg counts, weight gain and feed consumption, tracked over time, reveal which animals and practices are actually performing.
  • Log health events. Recording treatments, vaccinations and illnesses per animal helps you spot recurring problems and comply with any withdrawal periods before sale or slaughter.
