1. What is Soil pH?

Soil pH measures how sour (acidic) or sweet (alkaline) your ground is on a scale from 1 to 14. A pH of 6.0 to 6.8 is the ideal sweet spot for almost all vegetables, grains, and legumes. In acidic soil (pH below 5.5), plant roots cannot absorb phosphorus or nitrogen, even if you pour expensive fertilizer onto the field.

2. The Role of Agricultural Lime

Agricultural lime is finely crushed natural limestone rock. When mixed into acidic soil, it neutralizes acid hydrogen ions, raises soil pH, and adds vital Calcium and Magnesium. Lime takes 4 to 6 weeks to react in moist soil, so always broadcast and plow it in well before planting.

3. Understanding Nitrogen (N)

What it does: Nitrogen builds lush green leaves, strong vegetative stems, and plant proteins.
Signs of lack: Pale yellowing of older bottom leaves starting in an inverted V-shape from the tip.

How to Take a Proper Soil Sample for Testing

A laboratory soil test is only as good as the sample you send. Follow these 5 simple steps to get an accurate field sample:

  1. Sample in a Zig-Zag Pattern: Walk across your field in a zig-zag (W-shaped or Z-shaped) pattern. Do not take soil from just one spot or near ant heaps, manure piles, or fence lines.
  2. Clear Surface Trash: Scrape away the top layer of dry grass, weeds, and unrotted mulch.
  3. Dig a V-Shaped Hole: Dig down 15-20cm deep (plow depth). Slice a clean 2cm vertical slice of soil from top to bottom.
  4. Mix 15 to 20 Sub-samples: Place slices from 15-20 different spots in a clean plastic bucket and mix them together thoroughly.
  5. Pack 500g of Soil: Take about 500 grams (two handfuls) of the mixed soil, place it in a clean labelled plastic bag with your name and field number, dry it in the shade, and take it to the testing lab.

Soil & Fertilizer FAQ

Why should I split my top-dressing fertilizer instead of putting it all at once?

Nitrogen fertilizer dissolves very rapidly in water. If you apply all your top-dressing in one big dose and heavy rain falls, 40-50% of the nitrogen will wash deep down past the roots (leaching) and be lost forever. Applying half at knee-high and half at early flowering ensures the plant has fresh food when its growth demand is highest.

Can fresh chicken manure burn my crops?

Yes! Fresh chicken manure is very high in raw uric acid and ammonia salts. If applied fresh next to seeds or young roots, it will draw moisture out of the plant and "burn" the crop. Always let poultry manure compost and cure under shade for 4 to 8 weeks before applying it to your fields.

What is the difference between Calcitic Lime and Dolomitic Lime?

Calcitic Lime contains pure Calcium Carbonate and is used when your soil has enough magnesium. Dolomitic Lime contains both Calcium Carbonate and Magnesium Carbonate. If your soil test shows low magnesium or if you farm on light sandy soils, always choose Dolomitic Lime to supply both calcium and magnesium together.

Why did my maize turn pale yellow after heavy continuous rain?

Heavy rains cause two problems: 1. Waterlogging: water fills all the air pores in the soil, suffocating the roots so they cannot breathe or absorb nutrients. 2. Nitrogen Leaching: water washes mobile nitrate out of the topsoil. Once the water drains and the soil dries out slightly, apply a light nitrogen top-dressing to stimulate rapid green recovery.
